We then flew North to Copenhagen because I insisted on seeing a new country, and we’d heard this is a great city. Boy were the people right, Copenhagen is now one of my favorite cities!
We stayed in a very funky hotel that Jules found. The whole interior is this awesome pool area.Quite a bit of our down time was spent here. The city itself is charming. There is a fantastic blend of old buildings and new architecture. We found that everything in the place has been done with a lot of care and thought. The design is superb. This is understandably one of the more popular spots because it is so photogenic. We did a canal tour which was touristy, but still fun. A good way to see the place. Highlights were squeezing under bridges and also seeing the mermaid statue (apparently the second most disappointing monument in Europe lol). The food throughout the trip was absolutely superb. They eat well in Denmark! This is “Smørrebrød” – open-faced sandwiches with delicious toppings. I particularly loved their traditional fried herring. We were also blown away by the pastries, which were everywhere. This is our favorite little spot and I can attest that everything is delicious. We love their concept of hygge. And it is something that you feel. I think the welcoming people, thoughtful design, low ceilings, and inset restaurants all add to the feeling.A surprise highlight of our days in Copenhagen was the art museum – the Glyptotek. The design here is also stunning, with this huge central atrium filled with plants. In fact, plants is yet another thing that we love about Copenhagen. They are everywhere. The entire museum is fantastic – we particularly loved the sculptures. But at times it was also just the design of the museum itself that we loved. The ancient Egyptian exhibits were a surprise and absolutely incredible. To me, this was easily better than what we’ve seen at the British Museum. They have tons of incredible artifacts. And it was so quiet! We had many moments purely to ourselves. They have loads of artifacts that I’d never even heard of before. And many in unbelievable condition being many thousands of years old. When we saw this Van Gogh we had no idea that we would next be visiting that very spot!More charming streets. Also, they LOVE bikes in Copenhagen. At rush hours it was charming to see hundreds and hundreds of them zooming along.
