It’s awesome to make fun of Kim Jong-il

The excellent Big Picture blog from The Boston Globe recently published a set of photos of that lunatic leader, Kim Jong-il touring North Korea.

North Korea is so screwed up that it’s really interesting. Thank heavens I don’t live there.

Anyway, this blog has taken some of those photos and added hilarious captions to them. Kim is a pretty hilarious character to begin with (what he is doing to his people is no laughing matter).

Great collection of Bushisms

George W BushGeorge W Bush may or not be a complete idiot. Surely you can’t actually get through Yale and become president if you really are a moron?

But he definitely has said some idiotic things over his 8 years as president. The BBC has this awesome collection of ‘Bushisms’. Very funny.

Here are some of my favorites.

  • “The war on terror involves Saddam Hussein because of the nature of Saddam Hussein, the history of Saddam Hussein, and his willingness to terrorise himself.”
  • “I think war is a dangerous place.”
  • “The vast majority of Iraqis want to live in a peaceful, free world. And we will find these people and we will bring them to justice.”
  • “Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?”
  • “You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test.”
  • “It’s clearly a budget. It’s got a lot of numbers in it.”
  • “Information is moving. You know, nightly news is one way, of course, but it’s also moving through the blogosphere and through the Internets.”
  • “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” – I love this one! I wish it were true… But that’s another blog

Atheist Bus Campaign

Recently in London an evangelical Christian group ran a campaign of bus adverts for their website which claims that: all non-Christians will burn in hell for eternity.

Don’t be shocked. This is of course what should be believed by those who take the bible literally. (If you don’t then what makes you think you can pick and choose which parts you like!)

In response a British writer (Ariane Sherine) launched a campaign to run a positive ‘atheist’ bus campaign. The public pledged over £140,000 in support and now that campaign is a serious reality.

Buses all over Britain now display this message:

Atheist Bus Campaign

Nice. I like it. Catchy, friendly. Good stuff.

There has been quite a lot of debate about the use of the word “probably”. They went with “probably” because

  1. They wanted to keep the campaign light-hearted.
  2. More importantly atheists shouldn’t say that there is no God – you can’t prove that. They say there is “almost certainly no God” – which isn’t quite as catchy.

You can learn more on the campaign website FAQ or on the Wikipedia article

Jimmy Carter vs Swamp Rabbit

XKCD is a superb webcomic (although pretty geeky) that I follow religiously. I recently came across this one which I found funny.

Awesome XKCD cartoon

I thought it was pretty random so I Googled the incident and it turns out that Jimmy Carter was indeed ‘attacked’ by a swimming swamp rabbit in 1979! Read about it in the Wikipedia article: Jimmy Carter Rabbit Incident. There are also links to more detail.

Jimmy Carter stares at the crazed swamp rabbit that he had just fought off

Jimmy Carter stares at the crazed swamp rabbit that he had just fought off. Carter was out fishing alone when the swamp rabbit swam towards him and tried desperately to enter the boat. Mr President was forced to fend it off with an oar. Not sure that I believe this – but it does seem to be legit…

Placebo tablets for sale

Placebos work remarkably well – a lot of the time people aren’t really sick. I’m reading Captain Corelli’s Mandolin at the moment (seems pretty good) and one of the characters is a doctor on a Greek island occupied during WW2. He notes that in hard times (occupation) suddenly the islanders have far fewer medical complaints. They have something else to concentrate on!

So I find it pretty cool that this company is selling Placebo tablets in a very official looking container. The product is called Obelcap (You see they did there? Placebo backwards. Sneaky) and is described as “Delicious pharmaceutical grade natural cherry chewable tablets” Useful.

NewScientist headline: Great tits enjoying the warmer weather (picture included)

NewScientist has an awesome headline on one of it’s stories today: “Great tits enjoying the warmer weather”. I think that one might get quite a lot of traffic…

Anyway, the article is actually about how a species of birds in the UK known as great tits have responded to global warming by laying their eggs earlier. They need to time their laying pretty precisely and over the last 30 years their laying has shifted 2 weeks earlier in the spring.

So here is that picture of some young great tits:
